Pulsars and Gravitational Wave Detection
نویسنده
چکیده
The number of known millisecond pulsars has dramatically increased in the last few years. Regular observations of these pulsars may allow gravitational waves with frequencies ∼ 10 Hz to be detected. A “pulsar timing array” is therefore complimentary to other searches for gravitational waves using ground-based or space-based interferometers that are sensitive to much higher frequencies. In this review we describe 1) the basic methods for using an array of pulsars as a gravitational wave detector, 2) the sources of the potentially detectable waves, 3) current limits on individual sources and a stochastic background and 4) the new project recently started using the Parkes radio telescope.

Timing stability of millisecond pulsars and prospects for gravitational-wave detection
Analysis of high-precision timing observations of an array of ∼20 millisecond pulsars (a socalled “timing array”) may ultimately result in the detection of a stochastic gravitational-wave background. The feasibility of such a detection and the required duration of this type of experiment are determined by the achievable rms of the timing residuals and the timing stability of the pulsars involve...
متن کاملPulsar timing arrays: the promise of gravitational wave detection.
We describe the history, methods, tools, and challenges of using pulsars to detect gravitational waves. Pulsars act as celestial clocks detecting gravitational perturbations in space-time at wavelengths of light-years. The field is poised to make its first detection of nanohertz gravitational waves in the next 10 years. Controversies remain over how far we can reduce the noise in the pulsars, h...
متن کاملThe Spin Distribution of Millisecond X-ray Pulsars
The spin frequency distribution of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars cuts off sharply above 730 Hz, well below the breakup spin rate for most neutron star equations of state. I review several different ideas for explaining this cutoff. There is currently considerable interest in the idea that gravitational radiation from rapidly rotating pulsars might act to limit spin up by accretion, possib...
متن کاملDetecting the stochastic gravitational wave background using pulsar timing
The direct detection of gravitational waves is a major goal of current astrophysics. We provide details of a new method for detecting a stochastic background of gravitational waves using pulsar timing data. Our results show that regular timing observations of 40 pulsars each with a timing accuracy of 100 ns will be able to make a direct detection of the predicted stochastic background from coal...
متن کاملAstrometric and timing effects of gravitational waves
Gravitational wave detection can be done by precision timing of millisecond pulsars, and (with less likelihood) by precision astrometry on distant objects whose light or radio waves pass through gravitational waves on their way to our observatories. Underlying both of these is the relatively simple theory of light propagation in spacetimes with gravitational waves, which is also the basis of in...
